Common Heat Pump Problems
Many heat pump issues trace back to a lack of maintenance or dust buildup over time. The most common problems we see include:
- Low or leaking refrigerant
- Sensor malfunctions causing erratic operation
- Airflow restrictions from dirty filters or blocked components
- Outdoor coil defrost issues in cold weather
- Electrical connection failures
- Blower motor wear or debris buildup
Acting quickly on problems like refrigerant leaks, electrical failures, and airflow issues prevents further damage to the system. Delayed repairs almost always result in higher repair costs.
Types of Repairs We Perform
- Thermostat recalibration or replacement
- Refrigerant leak detection and repair
- Blower motor cleaning and replacement
- Outdoor coil defrost adjustment
- Filter cleaning and replacement

The Climate in New Britain and Bucks and Montgomery Counties
The New Britain area experiences real seasonal swings — hot, humid summers and cold winters. Many homes in our service area pair a heat pump with a gas furnace for backup heat on the coldest days. Total Comfort Solutions is experienced with both standalone heat pump systems and dual-fuel configurations.
Between Repairs
Change your air filter every one to three months to maintain airflow and system performance. Annual professional tune-ups catch developing problems before they become repairs.
Financing and Maintenance Agreements
Financing is available for new installations with approved credit. Total Comfort Solutions also offers preventive maintenance agreements that reduce the likelihood of breakdowns and give you priority scheduling.
The Repair Call You’ll Never Have to Make
The most common heat pump repairs we handle — refrigerant leaks, dirty coils, worn contactors — develop gradually and are almost always caught during routine maintenance before they cause a breakdown. The Total Comfort Club puts that maintenance on autopilot.
Members get both annual heat pump visits scheduled automatically — fall for heating season, spring for cooling season. When something does need repair, members get priority scheduling and 15% off parts and labor. One plan covers your heat pump year-round, both seasons, without you having to track anything.
One call to sign up.
We handle the scheduling every year after that.

Frequently Asked Questions
It depends on the age and condition of the system and how frequently it has needed repairs. If you are calling for service regularly, a replacement may be the more cost-effective choice. TCS can help you weigh both options honestly.
We have same-day booking availability and can often arrive within a few hours of your call.
Usually a refrigerant leak, a stuck reversing valve, or the system running in defrost mode. Defrost mode is normal and temporary — the system briefly blows cooler air while it clears frost from the outdoor unit. If it’s happening constantly or the air never warms up, call us.
That’s almost always the reversing valve — the part that switches the system between heating and cooling mode. When it fails or gets stuck, the system locks in one mode. It’s one of the more common heat pump repairs and can usually be resolved on the first visit.
Light frost in cold weather is normal. Heavy ice that doesn’t clear, or ice forming when temperatures are mild, points to a refrigerant issue, blocked airflow, or a defrost control fault. Left alone it stresses the compressor. Call us before it gets worse.
Maintenance is scheduled and preventive — cleaning, testing, adjusting before anything fails. A repair is a response to something that’s already broken or performing outside normal range. If your system is making new sounds, not reaching temperature, or behaving differently than it did last season, that’s a repair call.
Six questions that cover the scenarios heat pump owners actually run into — the heating/cooling confusion, ice buildup, the reversing valve issue, and the repair vs. replace decision. Want any changed?
Depends on the repair. A straightforward fix — reversing valve, capacitor, refrigerant recharge — is almost always worth doing at 12 years. A compressor replacement on a 15-year-old system is a different conversation. We’ll give you repair and replacement numbers honestly.
